A Move To The Mall
New store, same high quality, low prices
By Robert Pore, Columnist, GI Independent
For the almost 30 years in the furniture business in Grand Island, Roger Hughes knows how to get his customers the best deals possible. One of the lessons is when you cut your business’s overhead, you are better able to pass the savings to your customer. That is the idea behind Tri City Furniture in Grand Island’s Conestoga Mall. Up until June, Hughes operated Half-Price Furniture in downtown Grand Island, a business he started in 2011. Before that, he was part-owner of the Furniture Super Center at State Street and Highway 281. Downtown Grand Island is going through a lot of positive changes, but Hughes’ business was struggling because of the lack of foot traffic and rising operating costs. Wanting to make a change, Hughes moved his business to the mall. He also changed the name to Tri City Furniture. Hughes said he decided Half Price Furniture had a negative connotation. While his prices were low, it wasn’t because of the furniture’s quality. It was his the bare bones approach he took to running the business.
His philosophy is simple: “This is no frills,” Hughes said. “You see it, you buy it and take it home today and enjoy it tonight. Very simple. Why not save your family hundreds of dollars or even more?” Hughes said he runs the store by himself. He said this helps to keeps his costs lower than the competition. “You always deal with me,” he said. “Not an employee who gets paid commission and is looking out for themselves. I am the bookkeeper, janitor and everything in between.” That business approach allows him to offer his customers the “best furniture deals around.” “I have the lowest prices on new furniture in the area,” Hughes said. “There is no sales pitch. Compare and shop around and then come in and save your hard-earned dollars. No need to pay all those other stores expenses for them.” Every piece of furniture at Tri City Furniture is new, he said. “It is the same quality as you find in any other store selling only new items,” Hughes said. “There are factory warranties on most of the items.” And with the move to the Conestoga Mall, the new store has allowed Hughes to expand his show floor size. “It is nearly double the previous store size,” he said. The extra space also allows Hughes to have more storage at the store. At his previous store, he had to rent extra storage space. Eliminating that overhead is another way he can offer affordable prices. This allows Hughes to always to have the merchandise his customers want on hand. That means there is no waiting to move the furniture. Once the customer purchases the furniture, Hughes said it is up to them to have it moved to their home or business. He said he can help his customers find someone to move the furniture. Or, like many of his customers, they can pull their pickup to the back door of Hughes’ business, and he will help them load their new furniture. Tri City Furniture accepts most credit cards, and debit cards, but no personal checks. Hughes said financing is possible. Cash discounts may be available on larger purchases.
Hughes says he is thankful to the thousands of customers over the years who have supported his business venture. He also invites new customers to come to his store. Hughes said they will be surprised by low prices for a recliner or sofa or bed frame, headboard and mattress, along with the quality of the furniture. “I am not inventing the wheel here,” Hughes said. “You will always get the lowest prices on the furniture you want. I don’t pay a bunch of people to roll it down the road. I roll it myself, so my customers save money. It is as simple as that.”
Still at large - saving you money is not a crime!
